Carmen Villain is Norwegian-Mexican artist and producer Carmen Villain makes atmospheric music made up of tapestries of field-recordings, flute, piano, vocals, zither, programmed drums and synths, culminating in her own distinctive sound combining elements of fourth world ambient, experimental pop with an electro-acoustic vibe. Her new upcoming album 'Both Lines Will Be Blue’ is her third, and first fully instrumental album for Smalltown Supersound. A 7 track collection of cosmic fourth world excursions and dubby ambient jams, the album is written, recorded, played, produced and mixed by Carmen in her Oslo studio. The flute plays an integral part on this album, and is performed by Chilenean-Norwegian flautist Johanna Scheie Orellana (formerly of Sassy 009). Carmen got her in to the studio to both record melodies that she had written, as well as making plenty of room for impro/freeform. This also finds Carmen again collaborating with Prins Thomas, who contributed with percussion on a track. The album follows the acclaimed self-produced Infinite Avenue, her second for Smalltown Supersound following her debut Sleeper in 2013.
Carefully enveloped in cold synths, dark beats, and processed vocals, Maud immerses you into a dream world of electronic pop, with elements from trap and urban. With sincere lyrics echoing night time thoughts, claustrophobic dreams and fears of never being good enough, the artist delivers a dark and intriguing musical expression, sometimes taking unpredictable turns.Behind the pseudonym Maud stands songwriter, singer and producer Kristine Hoff. She grew up in Northern Norway, where the sun never shines or never sets, which clearly has made a mark on her dark and ballsy electronic pop. Nearly three years ago Maud started studying electronic music at the University of Agder in Kristiansand, Norway, and her time in the south has been well spent; this fall she will be releasing her self-produced debut album.Since 2013 she has appeared in various band constellations, performing at festivals and venues like Sørveiv, Trænafestivalen, Bodø Jazz Open and Parkteatret in Oslo. After playing at the showcase festival Sørveiv in Kristiansand, Norway, Under The Radar wrote: «(...) Maud is more in- your-face, matching heavy beats with an almost Public Enemy- like onstage countenance. Impressive.»Her debut single «Real» is a raw and in-your-face track; showcasing the artist’s distinctive songwriting. Between its edgy production and Maud’s hypnotic vocals, it suggests a forceful and artistic expression, sometimes taking unpredictable turns. With «Real» Maud invokes a sense of loss; both self-control and stable self- identity and explores a growing feeling of being unreal. She introduces herself as an honest, unusual and compelling songwriter; existing in between the bleak and melancholy and the playful and dream-like. The song which is both written, produced and performed by Maud herself, gives a promising start for the up-and-coming artist.
